Tissue expansion of lung bronchi due to tissue processing for histology – A comparative analysis of paraffin versus frozen sections in a pig model

Tissue shrinking due to fixation and processing is well known. However, the degree of shrinking varies significantly with the tissue type as well as the processing method and is not well studied in various tissues. In daily pathological routine workflow, histological specimens from frozen and paraffin sections are performed from the same tissue. Atraumatic maxillary sinus elevation using threaded bone dilators for immediate implants. A three-year clinical study.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of sinus floor elevation using sequential bone dilators. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients took part in the study (18 women and 12 men) with ages ranging between thirty-six and sixty-three years, selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, who showed a bone deficit in the upper posterior alveolar margin of 5-8 mm in height. Sixty expanded platform internal connection implants were placed with diameters of 4/5/4 mm and lengths varying between 10 (n=10) and 11.5 mm (n= 50). A 50 years-old man developed 24 hours after hemorrhoidectomy a severe Fournier's gangrene of the scrotum necessitating surgical exeresis of more than 2/3 of scrotal skin followed by hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Pre-expanded Anterolateral Thigh Perforator Flap for Phalloplasty.

The anterolateral thigh (ALT) perforator flap for phalloplasty is gaining popularity because it avoids the well-known scars of the radial forearm flap. However, scars are not eliminated, just moved to a different location, the thigh, that can for some patients be of great sexual value. Preexpansion of the ALT flap allows primary donor site closure, thus avoiding not only the unsightly appearance of a skin grafted ALT donor site, but also the skin graft donor site scar. Preoperative perforator location by means of computed tomography angiography allows safe expander placement through 2 small remote incisions.

Expanded forehead (Fricke) flap for large defect of lateral canthal area

The use of an expanded forehead (Fricke) flap to repair large full thickness defects of the lateral canthus and/or of the upper eyelid is presented. The reconstruction is performed in two stages. In the first stage, a rectangular, 25 ml tissue expander (6 cm in width and 2 cm in length) is inserted under the skin lateral to and above the eyebrow; expansion is completed in about three weeks. At the second stage, the lesion is excised, and the laterally based expanded flap is elevated. Using the expanded Fricke flap, thinner, abundant skin is obtained, and the donor site is directly closed, without grafting and without distorting the eyebrow.
